2020 a Season of Change for Bobby Gerhart

ARCA Menards Series Announces 2020 Television Schedule

Gerhart a part of distinguished 2019 Hall of Fame class
The 49th Annual Central Chapter PA Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony took place on Monday, Nov. 11 at the Lebanon Clarion Hotel/Rodeway Inn at 6:30 p.m.
Inductees this year include Becky Hower Kleinfelter, David Gingrich, Jared Odrick, Adam Brossman, Stacey Hollinger, Justin Hileman and Bobby Gerhart Jr.
Gerhart, who started his career as the 1978 Rookie of the Year at Linda’s Speedway in Jonestown and in 1988 was the ARCA Series Rookie of the Year, admitted, “Because of dad’s success you could say it was easy at times and a curse other times for me. It opened doors on a bigger level and got me out of the local level but to this day I still have people talk to me about him. I really felt for a long time I had big shoes to fill and it did put a lot of pressure on me on the short tracks around here.
“What that did was force me to look at the bigger picture. Not that I felt I was any better than the other short track drivers who come out of here, I just looked at it differently and understood that as racing improved tremendously in the 80s and 90s if I was going to have a career doing this I had to treat it as a business and get to the national stage.”
When asked about people who don’t think racing is a sport he quickly replied, “Racing has its differences if you compare it to baseball or football, but is it a sport. The mental side of racing has to do with how you come off with your competitors.
“The biggest difference is not only do you have to work on yourself to understand what you’re doing you also have an object, which is the biggest part of the game, in the car you drive.”
Gerhart made his NASCAR debut in 1983 at Pocono where he has more starts than any other driver, recorded eight wins in the Daytona 200 and three checked flags at Talladega Speedway.
“I had a good run for about a dozen years at Dayton and think a lot of my success was because I felt we beat a lot of guys before I got there and that comes from a state of mind, a bit of the history and how you deal with it,” he said.
Now in the position as a veteran he offered this advice to anyone who might be thinking about getting into the business. “I’d sit them down and tell them about the commitment it takes and point out it is a commitment for the rest of your life. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is you have to go in with both feet, not just a toe.”
He continued, “I still drive my own rig to the races and am as involved in my team at every level as anyone and that’s what has kept me in the game in addition to operating my Gerhart’s Truck World business in Lebanon.”
Also being honored are the Community Service Award winner James Gettle, Courageous Athlete Chris Morrow and the “Pop” Kelchner senior high school student/athletes Ryelle Shuey of Elco and Cedar Crest’s Logan Horn.
